In the Martial Arts it is the same thing.
The basic technique is called “basic”, because it represents a beginning and not a purpose in itself.

The self-study is a difficult and arduous path but, under no circumstances,  it is not good to let yourself discouraged !

Continuously you will need to pay attention to every detail, to understand the form of movement and do not improvise.
When you do not understand something is good to ask someone who has already completed that stage.

Is all about a careful observation of the model, especially that, and not just in Martial Arts, traditional schools emphasize on copying the master: in painting, in sculpture, in generally for all domains of Arts.

Also, the digital pedagogy has grown in recent years and covers many domains of knowledge.
On this background, the learning process it has to start somewhere: books, specialized DVD, Youtube documentaries, etc

But, the most important aspect in the personal development represents the initiative.
Beside that, what the future holds, nobody can know !

In my opinion, before technical issues like form, proper manner, etiquette, courtesy, etc in the beginning everything starts from genuine curiosity and sincere passion.

Over time, of course, some points or bad habits can be corrected, but, if you are not able to make a minimal research in your own area of interest, I do not see how can someone might help you, because the fundamental role of a teacher is to guide you, to open a door for you, but the student is one who goes beyond that door as I mentioned already due to his initiative, determination, curiosity and perseverance.

On the other hand, obviously it is easier to learn specific approaches or techniques in an authentic Dojo among advanced students and alongside famous teachers, however, not all those who want to learn have that privilege.
I think if someone really wants to achieve something, will find a suitable way as long as his desire is authentic.

Also, I consider that personal evolution consists in an individual adaptation inside of the system in which each is living and in the same time in an adaptation to all external systems with which one interacts.

The adaptation itself means the ability of self-studying !

The people should understand that is a fundamental difference between Kenjutsu and Kendo.

In each stage of the training should be emphasized the kihon and the kata for obtaining harmony in keiko.

every time I start my training I am thinking about that a technique which is repeated 10,000 times is more useful than 10,000 techniques repeated only one time.

Unlike the other Martial Arts that claim to come from semi-obscure or secret traditions passed from one generation of master to another, currently in Modern Kenjutsu* there are no such a secrets.

being equally a martial discipline and a sport, its essence consists in promoting a set of authentic values meant to help the develop of each practitioner and the society in a general way.
therefore, each kenshi is developing in an sincere environment governed by wisdom and honor.

on this line, novices and inferior ranks may have access and can observe easily in Dojo the advanced techniques from the very beginning and also the difference between them and the older practitioners.

the secret is not in the number of techniques known by each kenshi, but rather in the way of applied the learned technique.

in the end, it does not matter if you know only one technique or a chain of one hundred movements, but the attitude you may learn in the Dojo and the ability to use it in everyday life.

*Kenjutsu – notion formed by joining the Japanese words “Ken” translated as “Sword” and “Jutsu” translated as “Technique”.
used in this context, Kenjutsu does not refer to any traditional form prior to Meiji Restoration.

A few years ago I heard this Japanese quote which says that a long sword and a short sword are equal.

it is certainly that the attitude of combat is that which count along with an adequate strategy adapted to the context in question.

also should be set an well-balanced proportion between mental, technique and physical strength.
the lack of harmony between these three elements may cause the losing of the confrontation.

to some extent, the excesses can lead to quick success, and this term of quick should be understood in its proper terminology, but in general, are harmful on the long term.

for a sporting activity to be sustained lifelong and to be able to ensure one’s fulfillment in terms of resources and energy, in most cases, the middle way is desirable although this excludes the extreme top performance.

because in most cases the extremes actions are ruining the practitioner body, the chosen activity, whatever it is, can not be defined as a lifelong experience.
